"In August 1948, Mat Hilton was born, and Roger was at once transformed into a proud father. Ruth remembered: "'What a delightful little creature', he would keep saying, specs flashing and curious open-mouth grin.' Sketchbooks of this period contain surprisingly tender studies of baby or mother and child, as well as more surrealist drawings of linked and interlocking figures (with the example of Henry Moore no doubt in the background)..."
