Michael Rees. The Excavated Image: Paintings, Graphics and Sculpture

Rees’ paintings are populated by shadows, some of his figures emerge into focus, others seem to have evaded us and have receded into pictorial memory. There is a silence pervading the paintings, their inhabitants are mute, unable to explain the important events unfolding before us. They are reminiscent of scarred newsreels, the significance of the moment appears lost, but perhaps the answers await all of us at the edge of our collective memories.
