Stephen Buckley: Heads and Tails
13th May 2008 - 14th June 2008
Stephen Buckley, Proun, 2008
For his fifth exhibition at Austin/Desmond Fine Art, Buckley has produced a series of twenty seven paintings, majority of which reflect his experience and influence from his early pleasures in the circus, the majority of which were made between 2004 and 2008.
Stephen Buckley studied at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne under Richard Hamilton, where he benefited from contact with visiting tutors such as Pop artists Richard Smith (for whom he later worked as an assistant), Joe Tilson and Eduardo Paolozzi. In the late 60’s, Buckley began to present his paintings as substantial physical objects, constructed in frequently eccentric shapes which he then decorated. The clues to subject-matter were often indicated in the titles, which could be allusions to places or to historic styles.
A catalogue with introduction by Michael Bracewell is available.
